Obama taps Petraeus for Afghan war. Truman is best remembered for firing General Douglass Mac. Arthur… at the height of the Korean War.  The firing reaffirmed civilian authority over the military.  Mac.

Arthur was clearly insubordinate, privately meeting with members of Congress to discuss policy.  He also violated UN directives prescribed to him by the President.  Public opinion was decidedly on Mac. Arthur’s side, but Truman was supported by the military, lawmakers,  and constitutional scholars.  Publicly, Truman was firm, “Full and vigorous debate on matters of national policy is a vital element in the constitutional system of our democracy. It is fundamental, however, that military commanders must be governed by the policies and directives issued to them in the manner provided by our laws and Constitution.”    Truman was not playing politics for public opinion had already turned against the war.  The Korean War and Mac. Arthur’s firing were the deciding factors in Truman’s decision not to seek a second elected term. Commander- in- Chief is on the right. Truman summed it up years later… “I fired him because he wouldn’t respect the authority of the President. I didn’t fire him because he was a dumb son of a bitch, although he was, but that’s not against the law for generals.  If it was, half to three- quarters of them would be in jail.”     Give ’em Hell Harry !
